Team winner Prediction:

Key Points:

  • Kolkata Knight Riders have appeared to be a more accomplished team between the two, on paper as well as performance-wise
  • Punjab Kings are yet to zero in on their perfect playing eleven and that is having a major impact on their consistency
  • The Kings are a little too over-reliant on KL Rahul to not only provide them good starts, but also finish their innings

KKR vs PBKS Analysis:

The defeat of Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings has put the points table in an exciting position in the Indian Premier League 2021. While Sunrisers Hyderabad is already out of contention, these two sides are still hanging, albeit with only a moustache. The results of the next few matches will be crucial to get an idea of where the tournament is heading.

Next up in the tournament, Punjab Kings is set to take on Kolkata Knight Riders in a match that is very important for both the sides. For Punjab, a win is essential here and while Kolkata Knight Riders can still afford a loss, they really would not want to leave that option open. It is an important match for both these sides and a cracker of a competition is definitely on the cards.

Match Details:

Date: October 01, 2021
Time: 07:30 PM (IST)

Pitch and Weather Conditions:

The conditions in the previous match wre pretty good for batting and we are hoping for the same thing this time around. The ball came onto the bat a lot better and players were able to play through the line. Even if the pitch does slow up a little, a score of around 150-160 should be very much on the cards.

Kolkata Knigh Riders (KKR):

Kolkata Knight Riders looked down and out when the first half of the tournament ended and apparently this long break has certainly helped them massively. In the second half up until now, Kolkata Knight Riders have done an incredibly good job, winning three of their four matches, and are now the prime candidates to qualify for the playoffs. Having said that, they’ll still need to get at least two wins from their remaining three matches.

As it stands, Kolkata Knight Riders are placed at fourth position with a terrific net run rate of 0.363 in addition to the ten points that they have. They suffered a narrow loss at the hands of Chennai Super Kings in their last to the last match but then bounced back brilliantly into contention by defeating Delhi Capitals in a must-win game.

Kolkata Knight Riders have adopted an approach that is strikingly similar to how England goes about their business and it is no surprise that Eoin Morgan is leading the side. While the fans and management will be pretty happy with the way Morgan has led in the second half, Morgan’s form is not something that can be ignored. He is either getting out too cheaply or scoring a pedestrian pace, both of which can backfire in crunch moments.

Given that the Knight Riders no longer have the services of their star player in Andre Russell, the responsibility to Eoin Morgan has now grown manifold to provide impetus to the Knight Riders at the back end of the innings. Apart from Russell, the Knight Riders will also be missing Lokie Ferguson, who had done a tremendous job up until the last match he played.

Apart from the injuries and Eoin Morgan’s form, the Knight Riders seem to be doing most of the things right. The addition of Venkatesh Iyer at the top of the order has proved to be a brilliant move and with almost everyone batting freely, Kolkata Knight Riders are suddenly appearing to be at their dominant best. Besides, they bat pretty deep with the likes of Tim Southee and Sunil Narine available, which is certainly an added bonus given their style of play.

With the ball as well, Kolkata Knight Riders have done an immaculate job, especially on the surfaces that have had something for the bowlers. Varun Chakravarthy has been difficult to put away and so has Sunil Narine. However, with Lokie Ferguson and Andre Russell both not there, the death bowling certainly seem to be a bit of an issue, especially with both Tim Southee and Prasidh Krishna not known to be death bowling specialists. Venkatesh Iyer did a remarkable job in the last match and it would be interesting to see how consistent he can be with the ball.

All in all, the Knight Riders have almost everything going for them and they will be looking to fix the minor blemishes that they have. They have an in-form batting unit coupled with a versatile bowling attack. If they can get their batting and bowling sorted at the death overs, they will be the team to watch out for.

Likely XI: Shubman Gill, Venkatesh Iyer, Rahul Tripathi, Eoin Morgan (captain), Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik, Sunil Narine, Lucky Ferguson, Tim Southee, Varun Chakravarthy, Sandeep Warrier

Punjab Kings (PBKS):

Looking at the way Punjab Kings have performed over the past few seasons, it would be safe to say that no other team has let down their fans as often as Punjab Kings have. Punjab Kings have often been in a position to set the conditions but then have failed to close the crucial moments. They were looking good to qualify for the playoffs when they first took the field in the second half of the season, but some unintended consequences stifled their chances. They are still in, but they have to play really excellent cricket from here on out.

As it currently stands, Punjab Kings are sixth on the points table with eight points and a net run rate of -0.288. Not only will they have to score some points to go ahead, but they also have to improve their net run rate, which could be a defining factor, if things get tight.

In their last few matches, the batting has failed miserably for Punjab Kings but their bowlers have stepped up their game. They have been very inconsistent with their playing XI and batting order, both of which have had a devastating effect on their on-field performances. It was surprising to see neither Chris Gayle nor Aiden Markram opening the innings with KL Rahul, especially in the last match.

Although we don’t expect him to make any major changes in the playing XI unless, of course, Mayank Agarwal comes back or some last-minute injury strikes, we can well see that Shah Rukh Khan plays Mandeep. Can make a place in the team in place of Singh. Deepak Hooda. Hooda was used as a specialist batsman in the previous match and it makes more sense for Shah Rukh Khan, who has made the better bet between the two to hit the ball from the start. Nicholas Pooran has also not done anything concrete and the management may decide to look ahead to him in these tough times.

On the bowling front, the Kings have been brilliant and it was evident in their previous match as well. Despite not scoring a par in the previous match, players like Ravi Bishnoi, Mohammed Shami and Nathan Ellis did a remarkable job of getting out of it. Bishnoi, in particular, has been quite effective and can be a handful against the Knight Riders batsmen, who prefer some speed on the ball.

Overall, Punjab Kings are going through a lot of issues and they need to resolve them all quickly. Having said that, they have a lot of positivity from the last few matches and would like to play with freedom. If their veterans manage to find some form in the upcoming match, it will be very difficult for the Kings to get past it.

Likely XI: KL Rahul (c, wk), Mandeep Singh, David Malan, Adam Markram, Nicholas Pooran, Deepak Hooda, Harpreet Brar, Nathan Ellis, Mohammed Shami, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh
