India XI for 1st Test: Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (c), Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah
With the ODI and T20I series result levelled at 1-1, It is almost time for final and Team India’s toughest hurdle of the tour, the Test Series. The last time India played in Australia, India created history by winning their first-ever Test series by defeating Australia 2-1. However, Australia were weak on batting front then with David Warner and Steve Smith missing.
Australia claimed the ODI series 2-1 while India hammered the hosts 2-1 in the T20I series so far. Both the teams have won 3 games on the tour each. The saga moves on to the longer formats now with the 1st of the 4-Test Match series getting underway from 17th December at Adelaide.
This time though, the big news for Team India is that Virat Kohli won’t be available from the second Test match onwards. While the good news is that Virat Kohli would be playing the Pink ball Test match at Adelaide, but his captaincy and batting can be a huge blow to the Indian team once he departs. Also to note, Rohit Sharma shall be back for the third and final Test match, which is a big plus.
Nevertheless, Team India would be facing a lot of selection dilemma before the first Test match. For starters, 3-4 places are up for grabs. The second opener slot, the wicket-keeper, the lower-order batsman, and the third pacer are all undecided. However, the good thing is that Practice games have given us an indication of what could be the likely 11 for the 1st Test.
Date: 17th December (Thursday)
Time: 9:30 AM IST.
The temperature is expected to hover around 18°C through all the 5 days of the Test match, with humidity ranging from 40-55%. The sky is expected to be covered by the clouds and there are chances of rain-interruptions as well.
The surface at Adelaide is generally a batting-friendly wicket, but also has a lot for the pacers on offer. The cloudy skies will assist the swing bowlers and the batsmen will have a tough time facing the new ball. Overall, it’s a surface that has something for every department.
